YoyoFactory SpeedDialYoyoFactory SpeedDial
The YoyoFactory SpeedDial™ is a hybrid metal yoyo with an adjustable response system. This means you can make the yo-yo as responsive as you require. A metal yo-yo with the YoyoFactory pedigree that suits intermediate players.

Pros:
Precision Aluminium yo-yo
Stainless Steel Bearing Axle
Brilliant build quality
Innovative design.
F.A.S.T.® Fully Adjustable Starburst Technology®

Cons:
Perhaps not as durable as some yo-yos, but this is a precision piece.

Also consider:
If you want to go that extra mile consider the YoyoFactory 401sd. Think delux version of the Speed Dial.

YoyoJam HitmanYoyoJam Hitman
All of the YoyoJam yoyo's are very good, so it is very hard to select just one. The Hitman is one of the older YoyoJam models and remains a popular classic. It is often the yo-yo against which others are compared.

Pros:
Aluminium rims
Ball-bearing axle
Brilliant build quality
Sleeps well, minimal wobble or vibration
Looks as good as it plays
Versatile

Cons:
None really; there are lots of other brilliant yoyos made by yoyojam, but I had to pick one and this was my choice!

Also consider:
Any of the YoyoJam range! Of particular note (in my opinion) are the YoyoJam Dark Magic (which has such a following it has its own web site!) and the YoyoJam Speeder.

Duncan Metal ZeroDuncan Metal Zero
I think this is a truely amazing yo-yo for the price. A natural evolution of the best-selling Freehand Zero.

Pros:
Aluminium construction
Ball-bearing axle
Classic Freehand Zero shape and Duncan heritage
Looks the business
Versatile
Can be fitted with different friction stickers to modify the response
Comes with counterweights for offstring play.

Cons:
Same as the cheaper plastic Freehand Zero but more expensive because it is metal.
Uses friction stickers - not everyone likes these since friction stickers (aka 'pads'). They wear out and need replacing, although replacements are cheap and easy to fit so this is not really an issue for most. Also, as pads wear the response of the yo-yo changes. This means that there will be a 'sweet spot' at which the yo-yo plays just right for you, but this will not last forever. Eventually the pads will need replacing and wearing in again until you reach that 'sweet spot' again. Different pads are available that wear more slowly or evenly: experiment to find the ones that best suit you!

Also consider:
The original Freehand Zero yo-yo from Duncan is basically the same design but the body is made from plastics and so is a tad cheaper.

Note: Some of the first run of these had a fault which resulted in some bad publicity and poor reviews. This fault has now been corrected. This latest version is perfect.

If you haven't got a 'V' or butterfly profile yo-yo, then seriously think about getting one of these. Don't let the budget price put you off. It is a little gem.
