Yo-yos for Children and beginnersEuro-Yo Yo-Yo Shop | Yo-yo Buyer's Guide | Yo-yos for Children and beginners | Duncan Bumblebee Many may recognise this from the PlayMax Bumblebee, from which it is derived. It remains a very popular yoyo today, and for good reason. It has a classic shape that is best suited to looping tricks, and is a very easy yoyo to play.
Pros: Classic shape and design, good build quality. Shape makes looping tricks easy to learn. Easy to play Ball bearing axle Good value. Reasonably robust Great for kids
Cons: The classic yoyo shape makes it hard to learn string tricks. Not as versatile as other choices.
Summary: if you are a parent, then this is probably the type of yo-yo that you once played with, and it is still just as good.
Also consider: there are loads of other yoyos like this, many made by Duncan. Try the Speed Beetle for a cheaper alternative.

| | | PowerYo FX7 Black Widow The FX7 Black Widow yo-yo from PowerYo is a very popular yoyo which receives great reviews.
Pros: Great value Highly playable all-round good performer Robust Ball-bearing axle Good shape Cool pog (well, I think so!) Comes with a mini-CDROM
Cons: None that I can think of!
Also consider: the PowerYo Bullet yo-yo is a more traditionally-shaped yoyo for those that prefer looping tricks.

| | | Yomega Fireball The Yomega Fireball yo-yo is an easy to play yo-yo thanks to its transaxle design and traditional shape. It is nicely priced and comes in a huge range of colours. A very popular yo-yo.
Pros: Excellent value beginners yo-yo Good all-round good performer Robust Transaxle LOTS of different colours available
Cons: The cheaper transaxle design means this will yoyo will not spin for as long as a ball-bearing yoyo. This is not necessarily a bad thing for beginners since it makes the yoyo a bit more responsive (easier to return to the hand) but it can be limiting later on.
Summary: Cheap but really rather good!
Also consider: the Yomega Raider is a very similar design but features a ball-baring axle. Well worth the extra if you can afford it. Or, if you prefer something a bit more flashy, try the Yomega Lightbeam. Similar to the Fireball and also with a transaxle design but with LED lights! See the Yomega yoyo section for these.

| | | Yomega Power Brain XP Yo-yos featuring clutch or auto-return mechanisms are very popular and I just had to include one in this selection. The Powerbrain XP is the latest such yo-yo from Yomega. It lets the player switch on a clutch mechanism which auto-returns the yoyo to the hand when the yo-yo spin speed declines. When you want a manual return model, you can simply switch the clutch off. Great for learning to yoyo!
Pros: Switchable auto-return clutch makes learning to yoyo easier Classic shape and design, solid build quality. Easy to play Transaxle design Good value. Great for kids
Cons: Slightly gimmicky, but that said, it does make learning to yo-yo easier, especially for younger players. Any mechanical mechanism like the clutch system is more prone to fail. However, I have not had any reports of problems with these yo-yos. Transaxle system is not as good as a ball-bearing axle system.
Summary: A good choice for the younger player.
Also consider: For string tricks, try the Power Brain XP Wing: the same yoyo with a wing profile for string tricks.

| | | YoyoFactory FAST 201 The F.A.S.T. yo-yo from YoyoJam is a best-seller. It represents excellent value for money, and is a versatile and capable player. With their long sleep times and comfortable shape, kids love them! A great playground yo-yo, but also a super beginners yoyo for players of all ages.
Pros: Great value Highly playable Fairly robust Ball-bearing axle
Cons: Rather a noisy ball-bearing axle.
Also consider: the YoyoFactory Velocity is a new model from YoyoFactory and is an excellent playing alternative for a more ambitious learner. The YoyoFactory Speed Dial yoyo is a very desirable yoyo but is more expensive. All perform brilliantly.

| | | YoyoJam Lyn Fury The YoyoJam Lyn Fury is a lovely yo-yo for children and beginners!
I have never heard a bad word about these fantastic yo-yos. Every review is glowing. If you want to buy your first yo-yo, then this is my number one recommendation.
Pros: Superb build Robust Ball-bearing axle system for all trick types 'V'profile for string tricks but very versatile Very playable Top value budget yo-yo.
Cons: Longer learning curve but you will go further with this yo-yo. I might not have the colour you want. Younger buyers might think it looks a bit 'boring' and lacking in gizmos like LED lights, fancy graphics or auto-clutch functionality.
Conclusion: This yo-yo is a capable player and will comfortably take you from your first tricks to advanced tricks. In my opinion - perfect!
Also consider: Speedmaker and the Kickside, both by YoyoJam. Similar quality yo-yo's but I might have more colours!
